University of Oxford

The Oxford city tourism is mostly recognized for being the home to the oldest university of the English speaking world, the University of Oxford. Oxford University is the dream destination of the best of the students of the world, not only because it is the oldest but also as it has still been able to maintain the high standard of education. The university not only attracts the students but many visitors because of its age old and still preserved incredible architecture.

The University of Oxford dates back to the twelfth century. The institution is commonly identified as having health rivalry with The University of Cambridge after the quarrel amongst the students and local residents in Oxford which lead to the evacuation of many students to Cambridge.

 
       

 

Museums

 

The university's education facilities has supported many museums including The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology and The Pitts River Museum.

The oldest among the lot is the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, in fact it is the oldest museum in Britain, built in 1845. It is situated at the Beaumont Street. The museum is mainly known for its wide range of archaeological and fine art collections along with the Collections of Elias Ashmole. The recent renovations of the museum has led to the additions of a gift shop and restaurant for its visitors.

Built in 1884, Pitt Rivers Museum, is a worth mentioning place. It has an amazing way of growing its collection, the number of items have gone to double and the increase is mostly because of the donations of the scholars and the missionaries. The collection is mainly archaeological and anthropological. As with other museums the items here are not displayed chronologically but are shown according to how they were used traditionally.

New Theatre Oxford

The New Theatre Oxford, previously known as The Oxford Apollo, is apt for those who wish to peep in to the culture of the place. The variety provided by the theatre productions here is amazingly different.

Welsh National Opera

Welsh National Opera, dance, ballet and major successful musicals such as Chicago, all under one roof. And to add to the excitement of the contemporary music lovers, the theatre organizes regular large scale music concerts as the theatre has a capacity to hold 1800 people.

Located in the north end of Oxford are the Cutteslowe and Sunnymead Park, they are the largest park in the city.

The Cutteslowe area is more famous for the cricket and football pitches that can be hired for the day by the visitors whereas, the Sunnymead area found towards the south of the park is generally meant for the teenagers looking forward for a skating parks or basketball courts or a youth shelter.All in all the park is best for those wishing to spend a day in the green outdoors as it has amazingly diverse facilities for all ages such as a children's play area and sports grounds.

For shopaholics, there are store opened seven days a week and also offer late night shopping on selected days.
